Im sure this sounds a bit braying and discordant to Western ears ... mine too, but while listening I realized that because George was so used to playing slide guitar that he was more accustomed to the place between the (standard) whole and half stepped intervals we are so used to in the West. All of that bending of notes inside of the space where you don't know where it belongs is an element of Indian music that takes some getting used to. And that's perhaps why he understood it quicker than most.
