Best trumpet I've heard in my 77 year lifetime. 2nd place doesn't even come close..Thankfully I have most of his LP platters.

Maynard wasn't a person, he was a legend.

I played trumpet for 10 years of lessons and four years of International Music Camp and thought I had heard the best but Maynard tops the high end tone and sustained control - I do not how it is possible other than an awesome armature.  What I'd give to be able to play for 60 seconds like that.  One might have to be a trumpet player to fully appreciate that talent.

~50 years later from first hearing him and my becoming a decent horn player at one point along the way, but I’ll never fathom that level of embouchure endurance.

amazing piece of music!!! god i remember when my parents bought this album when it came out and they played it constantly. it was like the soundtrack to our childhood.

Man, that is a bass-line (starting 2:57). Reminds me of a faster version of Billy Cobham's Stratus.

Saw him, and his band, live in 1977. Pensacola Saenger Theater. Sold out concert! Our high school trumpet section went as a group and even had back stage passes. He was awesome and really showed us the love. Treated us great!

No one could hit those high notes like Maynard. I spent hours in my bedroom trying to play along with this.

He’s the best of the best

Maynard employed a.method called circular breathing whereby he was able to breathe through his nose while playing. This enabled him to play long passages without breathing . Also he was a physical specimen. He was known to warm up in the morning by swimming several laps around his Olympic sized pool.
