Staring into the eyes of Mingus in whiteface and clown makeup while that music builds

Watching Jerry Maguire and hearing this song come on at the time that it did did it for me! Made me drive for awhile when the movie was over with no particular place to go, just blaring this tune over and over. Thanks for posting!

If I were a pro ball player, this would be my walk up music. This is badass.

this stuff freaks me out, I mean, the bass solo, the brass theme that comes out of nowhere, the screams. unbelievable

He was certainly a major influence on Frank Zappa. You have to take into account that not all music is meant for the masses. Composers will compose even if nobody at all listens to it. As far as the bass player argument, how can Mingus be compared to Pastorius? As far as I know Mingus didn't play electric bass. They are both great artists. Competition is blurring people's vision of what a musician really is.

So glad my bass teacher showed me how to play this bass line. I'm a beginner, but it feels good to be able to play some real music on the bass!

i just read the personnel for this piece and it's ONLY 5 GUYS! Everytime I previously heard this same piece I thought it was a big band. 5 GUYS! DAMN! Amazingly huge sound they make

Mingus' bass playing in this is truly exceptional.

This is an epic performance for a Mingus group. Sounds so much bigger than a quintet. Mingus' bass is volcanic and Dannie Richmond pushes then along like a big band. Jimmy Knepper is magnificent on trombone. Truly one of my favorite tunes of all time. Mingus said he couldn't solo like that if he wasn't feeling predudice and hate and how unfair it is.

Charles Mingus is inarguably the best bassist/composer of the 20th century. Its a shame most people have never heard his music.

quite apart from the arrangement, Mingus himself is epic on this...
