The whole song is incredibly good. Minor key over poetic lyrics describing ordinary images, creating amazing metaphors that can take you to a lot of meanings. Then two verses in, minor key break, and she leads us into a major key childlike rhyme about poultry. And when she leads us out with 'wings are nearly free...' it's like angels drew close for a moment to Earth to connect us to somewhere just beyond what we see and hear and to someplace where we are free, really free. - just what I hear.
This song is like a beautiful still life painting. So visual in her description of everything. Not trying to sell you anything, not trying to tell you how to feel....just painting a beautiful picture.
Suzanne Vega, in 1987 -
"'Ironbound/Fancy Poultry' refers to a meat market in an area of New Jersey that was bounded by railroad tracks and I have always thought that the lyrics are partly literal (descriptive) and partly metaphorical."
I like this song.
Suzanne is an amazing poet and musician..I think this is finest song she has ever recorded. The orchestration, the dynamics, everything about it gives me chills. I listen to a wide variety of musical styles and I have to say that Vega can move seamlessly between any that she wishes.. I respect your talent Suzanne. Thank you for all of the wonderful works throughout the years. You were and still are a huge inspiration to my music.
Absolutely stunning song. So glad I discovered Suzanne in my teens and have had her with me all this time. When everything is falling apart you can just listen.
She has a zillion faces. Every picture of her looks different. I've listened to her music for about 20 years now, yet I think I would not recognize her if I saw her in person....but that voice is unmistakable.
this woman single-handedly and remotely saved my life thro her song when i was 15yrs old. i would like to think of her one day coming here and reading thro all these wonderful comments so she gets to know, in a lo-key unembarrassing kind of way, just what an inspiration she is and how she continues to touch upon so many ppls lives in deeply majickal ways..
biGThx S, beautiful one ! xxxxx
Solitude Standing's success , in 1987 , was truly deserved .Suzanne Vega is a timeless poetess , more than a simple singer . And her voice has something special too . Since that time I still love her as many of us .
