This was my dads all-time favourite song. He was in a coma for a week, the minute I put this song on he began to die, and died right at the end of it, my face to his crying as he took his last breath. Bye bye daddy, I hope you are so happy, I miss you so much, the pain is enormous I miss you so much, be in peace, I love you, you're my best. I just want to be with you. Love you.❤Forever and ever, this is your song daddy.
Love the way Coltrane's sax quotes from Pick Yourself Up (Start All Over Again) at the end of his chorus, then Red Garland quotes the same thing during his piano solo. These guys!
This song always reminds me of my grandpa. He had this song on a piano roll, and he used to pump it for me before my feet could reach the pedals. He just died this past weekend, and I played this version of the song on trumpet as part of his funeral. Thanks for everything, Grandpa.
When I was in my early teens I became a modern jazz fan. Most of the records I brought home probably sounded alien and forbidding to my parents, but my mother who was from the south, recognized the melody of Bye Bye Blackbird and enjoyed listening to the Davis group's 'jazzed up' arrangement. She would snap her fingers as Red Garland riffed away. To this day I am grateful we were able to share that.
