Incredibly moving when Lester is soloing and Billie looks on.

I don't think I've seen Billie looking as happy anywhere else as in this video. It's so nice to see her appear to have fond memories and thoughts as she sings, moves, rocks, and looks on at the array of jazz masters around her. This is truly a gem.

If Billie Holiday had never made another record, other than this one, she would have still gone down in jazz history as one of the finest singers of her era, if not ever. Of course it goes without saying, the guys play a major part in what must be one of jazz' finest moments. Having said all that. What makes this version of fine & mellow so special, is the whole thing, not just one part or another, but it's entirety.

Like Lester was trying to say something to Billie through his saxophone. What a connection...

Makes my eyes water every time I watch this. And this is the latter part of her career when her voice is supposedly not as fine.... whoa

Billie was every woman's singer for the blues most men caused us......we knew we were never alone....the drunks.....the cheaters....deadbeat dads etc.....she sung it for us.....what a loss....she wrote what we USE to be afraid to say....

What you have to keep telling yourself is that this was late career Billie Holiday and it was live on a CBS TV music show and the performances were flawless. Every musician -- indescribably perfect. Do you think trumpeter Doc Seversen was watching this show when he heard Doc Cheatham (coincidence they both had the first moniker Doc?) take his supernatural trumpet solo? Nice to see Billie give facial approvals to every one of her musicians as they took their solos. She knew she had the best. Even that crew-cut hipster looking college boy Gerry Mulligan -- damn, when he stepped forward to solo you knew he belonged with these cats. This is a classic television performance. Billie will always be one of the quintessential singers of the 20th Century. She was the high water mark in jazz. Ella is up there too no doubt....but Billie worked a different side of the street as a jazz singer. No "Tisket-a-Tasket" in her repertoire.

Lester Young was soooo layed back. That solo was behind the beat and grooved like a mofo!
