can you see?
as morning s light breaks over me
at the bottom of the sea
and she could take your life
I know what lies beneath, as morning s light breaks over me, the stars retreat behind their veil
Like blood it covers over me, can you see?
And soon the sea shall give up her dead, can you see the sky turn red
the storm is coming
like blood it covers over me
I ve seen the flash of teeth, can you see the sky turn red
i ve seen the flash of teeth
Can you see?, with one good kiss Sky, look and see the sky turn red
And smiling in my dreams, as morning s light breaks over me
at the bottom of the sea
And smiling in my dreams, as morning s light breaks over me
To sink our ship, she whispers this
And smiling in my dreams, i ve heard her call to me
Her tongue a thirsty knife, at the bottom of the sea
i know what lies beneath
Know tonight we ll make our bed, know tonight we ll make our bed Thrice, i know what lies beneath
Like blood it covers over me, i know the ocean speaks
i ve seen the flash of teeth
She whispers this, the wind s a cheating wife Sky, to sink our ship
I know what lies beneath, her tongue a thirsty knife
"Can you see the sky turn red, as morning's light breaks over me."
Red sky at morning; Sailor take warning.
It's like a voyage, and they see a storm is coming, and they will soon be swallowed by the sea. They accept it, and their empire will rise again.(the second coming, anyone?) lol
The first verse is one of the most poetic examples of Dustin's lyrical genius. "The flash of teeth" is stormy waters. The rough white caps of aggressive waves threatening to "bite" vulnerable sailors. "The winds a cheating wife." While the wind supports sailors by moving the ship, it can "cheat" on them in a storm with its power and cause the ship to wreck. Sometimes his lyrics can be slightly unwieldy (though rarely) and sometimes the themes in a song may not be completely cohesive. But on the whole, Dustin Kensrue is a wealth of incredibly lyrical ideas and poetics
When my daughter (now 8) was an infant, she had colic and screamed pretty much from 7pm until 11 if we were lucky, or 3 if we weren't. Thrice/red sky saved us while we were in the car. It was played on a continuous loop, and it worked. So many thank yous for this song!
This classic is 15 years old now. To put it in to perspective, imagine being in 2005 and listening to Smells Like Teen Spirit and thinking how old that song was.
Time is the enemy.
My best acid trip ever ended up being an all nighter by myself, playing “Glover” on N64 volume muted, while listening to this album on vinyl for 12 straight hours of absolute bliss. Man I want to go back there.
"Red Sky"
I know what lies beneath, I've seen the flash of teeth.
Conspiring with the reef to sink our ship.
The wind's a cheating wife, her tongue a thirsty knife.
And she could take your life with one good kiss.
Can you see the sky turn red?
As morning's light breaks over me,
Know tonight we'll make our bed
at the bottom of the sea.
I know the ocean speaks, I've heard her call to me.
And smiling in my dreams she whispers this
(The stars retreat behind their veil.
The clouds are clinging to your sail.
The storm is coming can you see?)
Can you see the sky turn red?
As morning's light breaks over me,
Know tonight we'll make our bed
at the bottom of the sea.
Look and see the sky turn red.
Like blood it covers over me.
And soon the sea shall give up her dead.
We'll raise an empire from the bottom of the sea
