This has took me back to my childhood I was eight when and my brothers had got the record, never stopped playing it great memories thank you for the memories , Shirley h Darlington england
This was my grand father favorite song, he loved cowboy songs. When he was at the hospital, my mom sang this to him one more time. She was holding his hand while singing. At the end of the song, he passed away, smiling.
Poor grand'pa... He was bound to die
My name is Tom Dooley I've been sung this song my entire life by mostly older people that I've met. Ive come to the acceptance that I am bound to die at some point but if people would stop reminding me in a catchy song that would be great. Also if you were wondering playing this on guitar while actually being Tom Dooley is super satisfying and depressing.
We learned about this is class a while back and the story we were told was that Tom didn't kill Laura but another woman that was jealous of her did because she wanted Tom but he wanted Laura
Through all my years in school we used to sing this. Now I'm 20 years old and this is the first time I have actually heard this from anything else that my crappy 4th grade teacher and class singing
This is one of the very first songs I learned to play on the guitar. A chord song that made it to the top. I have always loved the song as folk music is a good place to find country music too. This group is truly one of the best. This may be the original of this song.
I thought the lyrics were:
"Hang down your head Tom Dooley
Hang down your head and cry
Hang down your head Tom Dooley
Your tie is caught in your fly...."
Funny, my grandfather used to play this band all the time when I was young, and I never got the meaning of these songs till my early 20s. One of my favorite bands now. :)
