Favorite line has be "stabbed her with my knife." Doesn't sound so serious for just murdering someone.

This was my grand father favorite song, he loved cowboy songs. When he was at the hospital, my mom sang this to him one more time. She was holding his hand while singing. At the end of the song, he passed away, smiling. Poor grand'pa... He was bound to die

My name is Tom Dooley I've been sung this song my entire life by mostly older people that I've met. Ive come to the acceptance that I am bound to die at some point but if people would stop reminding me in a catchy song that would be great. Also if you were wondering playing this on guitar while actually being Tom Dooley is super satisfying and depressing.

This is one of the very first songs I learned to play on the guitar.  A chord song that made it to the top.  I have always loved the song as folk music is a good place to find country music too.  This group is truly one of the best. This may be the original of this song.

I thought the lyrics were: "Hang down your head Tom Dooley Hang down your head and cry Hang down your head Tom Dooley Your tie is caught in your fly...."

Funny, my grandfather used to play this band all the time when I was young, and I never got the meaning of these songs till my early 20s. One of my favorite bands now. :)
