My son loved this song as a teenager, I remember him singing along to it on his ' Ghetto blaster' unfortunately his life ended in the 1980s, never had the chance of growing up.

This song was written about the troubles of Northern Ireland. I remember working there in this time and the lyrics are very poignant. I understand that the song is about one person from the Catholic and another from the Protestant side coming together. The lyrics "cross the lines and dance upon the streets" is about the interface of peace lines that were constructed to keep the warring factions apart. They were also known as "flashpoints" and the scenes of often brutal violence. So crossing the lines was not for the faint of heart.
The lyrics relating to father's teaching are about the indoctrination on both sides, parents do the best with what they have learned and lived through from their own perspective.
Later we hear of the "music of the parades" and the drums fade at the end with innocent children's voices at play. The marching parades were a very provocative element of the conflict in Northern Ireland. The hope is "there's always one escapes"! People are resilient.
