The recording is from 1927 and the song is by Willie Raskin, Billy Rose, and Fred Fisher, not Cole Porter. Porter wrote a musical by the same title later.
Her autobiography is "Some of These Days". It's readily available even yet; I've been told that unautographed copies are by far the hardest to find! It's sure worth reading.
Her entire career Sophie dressed to kill. Even as an older, bigger lady she always epitomized elegant fashion. She was extremely generous to good causes and when she toured she had great friends waiting for her in every city, friends she'd made on previous visits. She was an exceptional cook and loved to come to people's homes to make Sunday dinner for everyone to enjoy. Her show, once considered so very naughty, today seems nearly innocent. But not quite!
It was an impulse purchase at a local thrift store that turned me on to Sophie, I had heard her name in the movie "Chicago" and was curious. She is amazing, and it turns out she grew up in Hartford, CT. I was raised not too far from there
In fact when this song was written there were only 40 million people living in Metropolitan France.... I'm not sure where this leaves the force of Sophie's argument..
