Joplin wrote this and performed it in 1914. It was his last composition. Audience reaction was mixed, to say the least. Laughter was part of it, as the audience mocked his efforts. Whether it was a Racial thing, I am unsure. The audience apparently disliked the Melancholy tone which crept into his later works (like this one). But Joplin broke down and cried, afterwards. He was unwell at the time, and died 3 years later. I actually learned about this in 1964, when taking piano lessons.
