Thanks for this. Excellent stereo sound and up-beat version of this classic !
The French singer Claude Nougaro made an excellent cover in 1965 called "Sing Sing Song"
Breaking up big rocks on the chain gang
Breaking rocks and serving my time
Breaking rocks out here on the chain gang
'Cause I been convicted of crime
Hold it steady right there while I hit it
There, I reckon that ought to get it
Been workin' and workin'
But I still got so terrible long to go
I committed the crime, Lord of needin'
Crime of bein' hungry and poor
I left the grocery store man bleeding
When they caught me robbin' his store
Hold it steady right there while I hit it
There, I reckon that ought to get it
Been workin' and workin'
But I still got so terribly long to go
And judge he say, "five years hard labor
On the chain-gang you gwine t'go"
I heard the judge say, "five years labor"
I heard my woman scream, "Lordy, no!"
Oh, hold it steady right there while I hit it
There, I reckon that ought to get it
Been workin' and workin'
But I still got so terrible long to go
Wanna see my sweet honey baby
Wanna break this chain off and run
Wanna lay down somewhere shady
Lord, it sure is hot in the sun
Hold it right there while I hit it
There, I reckon that ought to get it
Been workin' and workin'
But I still got so terrible long to go
Breaking up big rocks on the chain gang
Breaking rocks and serving my time
VERY SURPRISING
Sounds Great, however( HUGE ERROR ON THIS TRACK) you go to all that trouble to make the record and the drum stabs in first sequence sad to say some ain't quite on it.yeah even the second and third are in front of the beat. Now golden rule is on the beat or implied behind, may be but never ever in front .Now If its live OK but don't put it out. if it's studio then they used separate tracks and did not play all at the same time, which is how blues and jazz should be recorded. So recorded like you would a commercial pop track. ( No problem, as many mistakes as you wish on improvising that's creativity, but on the HEAD, that is very poor indeed)
Buckethead said fun not funny. And he's right, despite the subject matter it is fun to listen to.
A great song. I just discovered Oscar Brown Jr, and i'm glad i did.
Sometimes I feel like such a punk kid, even at my age...
The first time I ever heard this tune was, I believe, on an LP by Herb Alpert and the TJB, but I was smart enough back then to read the credits under the song titles, and see who the writers were...
This was written by Nat Adderley, and I'd heard of his brother Cannonball, so I looked around and found their recording of this.
A few years later, I came across Paul Butterfield's version, and thought, "How cool, a blues band doing this..."
And I've heard lots of other versions since, but not until tonight did I find out that Oscar Brown had put lyrics to it, and recorded it himself, superbly...
...three years before anyone had ever heard of the Tijuana Brass.
(I still feel like an ignorant punk, but, maybe, not quite so much now.)
