Damn! Nina looks mad regal and beautiful up there on that stage rocking the hell out of that Afro! I often debate with my friends over which is the best version is the best. Don't get me wrong, I'm a huge fan of Donny Hathaway and Aretha Franlin- as well as their awesome soulful renditions of this song. However, I think Nina's original version is more Ethereal than the other versions. Aretha and Donny took this song to Church, no doubt. But Nina took this song to the Heavens.Much Respect!!!!
In many ways I feel she was the Lauryn Hill of her time. Lauryn possessed the same motive, reality and insight when she joined the Fugees and dropped Miseducation. If you mirror both artists in their prime in different eras: Nina was raw, honest and soulful but never gave up her blackness or knowledge of what it truly meant to be black at that time, she was outspoken and not many people understood who she was and what she was really trying to do regarding most of black America. Lauryn is the same way. How she explained taking off from music to be a woman who knows what she wants whilst not being dictated by any means necessary, and she felt media never fully got it. But Miseducation fully explained who she was at the time and that's probably that particular album is influential to this day. I guess that's why Lauryn chose to help curate and appear on the compilation because her and Nina related so well in them being real strong black women who defied the odds regardless of color. I've sensed that for a while now.
She had such beautiful eyes and there is something about her when she talks, she seems innocent but wise at the same time, young but old. She was so earnest, its hard not to like her.
I'm raising my daughter with the same moto..."She's Young, Gifted and Black. ...let's be conscious about this. Being Pro Black doesn't make you Anti White✊
I went to the new African-American museum in DC and they have a handwritten letter of hers in the music section. It felt so awesome to see something that she actually touched with her own hands. I love her.
I cry every time i hear this song, there is so much power and relevance to this song even today.Today more than ever we need an anthem such as this. I am young gifted and black, that's a fact. It's where it's at!!!
To be young, gifted and black,
Oh what a lovely precious dream
To be young, gifted and black,
Open your heart to what I mean
In the whole world you know
There are billion boys and girls
Who are young, gifted and black,
And that's a fact!
Young, gifted and black
We must begin to tell our young
There's a world waiting for you
This is a quest that's just begun
When you feel really low
Yeah, there's a great truth you should know
When you're young, gifted and black
Your soul's intact
Young, gifted and black
How I long to know the truth
There are times when I look back
And I am haunted by my youth
Oh but my joy of today
Is that we can all be proud to say
To be young, gifted and black
Is where it's at
Took a moment to listen To be Young Gifted and Black and my soul is satisfied..Nina Simone thank you for reminding me about the work we have to do.Sankofa!
