Great song performances return to one bearing great memories. It must have been about early '51 and this new fellow named Lanza hit the scene with his Be My Love recording. My Mother was an old Caruso devotee and we listened to old Edison cylinders of his and John McCormack and others. I came in with a new 78 of Lanza doing La Donna e Mobile and put it on. Halfway through my Mother got goose bumps and started having palpitations. I popped a garlic clove under her tongue and all was well again!
Beautiful voice, silanced at 38 (I think). My friends thought I was a square because I loved opera, and Mario Lanza was my favourite. I think we will never have another one like him. Too hard to beat. During the years I've listened to numerous opera singers, they were good, but still couldn't hold a candle to Mario. Gone but never forgotten.
One of my late father's favourite singers,i couldn't understand why when i was a child, but over the years i can see what my dad saw in him, some 45 years after my dad passed he would be pleased that i play his favourite singer.
