You don’t own me
I’m not just one of your many toys
You don’t own me Don’t say I can’t go with other boys
Don’t tell me what to do Don’t tell me what to say
An' please, when I go out with you
Don’t put me on display
You don’t own me Don’t try to change me in anyway
You don’t own me Don’t tie me down 'cause I’ll never stay
I don’t tell you what to say
I don’t tell you what to do So just let me be myself
That’s all I ask of you
I’m young and I love to be young
I’m free and I love to be free
To live my life the way I want
To say and do whatever I please
You don't own me
I'm not just one of your many toys
You don't own me
Don't say I can't go with other boys
And don't tell me what to do
Don't tell me what to say
And please, when I go out with you
Don't put me on display 'cause
You don't own me
Don't try to change me in any way
You don't own me
Don't tie me down 'cause I'd never stay
I don't tell you what to say
I don't tell you what to do
So just let me be myself
That's all I ask of you
I'm young and I love to be young
I'm free and I love to be free
To live my life the way I want
To say and do whatever I please
And don't tell me what to do
Oh, don't tell me what to say
And please, when I go out with you
Don't put me on display
I don't tell you what to say
Oh, don't tell you what to do
So just let me be myself
That's all I ask of you
Whenever I listen to this, I feel like I’m divorcing my husband and take all the properties and children when I walk my petty self out of the court house in a fur coat and sunglasses in the 50’s. The funny thing is
I’m not even married, I’m only 17
We were newly married when my wife and I first heard Ms. Gore's "You Don't Own Me".
I immediately loved the tune and arrangement.
"You liked that?" my wife asked,
"Oh, yeah!" I replied.
And with that special, pointed look in her eye, she said, "Good".
Then I realized she was referring to the lyrics.
I took it to heart and fifty years later it turns out to have been very good advice from both ladies.
Sadly, they're both gone now but the music, the memories and my gratitude endure.
