A shame you picked the photo from "Surrealistic Pillow," which has Grace Slick and not Signe Anderson, who was the female vocalist on this song.

There's a high flying bird, way up in the sky now Yes, and I wonder if she looks down as she flies on by Well, she's riding on the air so easy in the sky And, Lord, look at me (yeah) I'm rooted like a tree (Oh yeah, yes, I am now) I've got the sit down, can't cry, oh Lord, I'm gonna die blues Oh, when I use to love a man, he worked in a mine, Lord Oh, well, he never saw the sun, but he never stopped trying Oh, then one day my man, he up and died My man up and died, Lord My man up and died, Lord (yes, he did) Well, he wanted to fly and the only way to fly was to die There's a high flyin' bird, way up in the sky, now And, yes, I wonder if she looks down as she flies on by Well, she's riding on the air so easy in the sky Hey, lord look at me (Yeah) I'm rooted like a tree (Hey, yes, I am now) Got the sit down, can't cry, Oh Lord, I'm gonna die blues (Yeah, I'm going to die now) Got the sit down, can't cry, Oh Lord, I'm gonna die blues (Yes I am, yes I am)

Credit to the brilliant Billy Edd Wheeler who wrote this classic coal mining song in 1963.

The background picture is the album cover for Surrealistic Pillow. The band members are holding their instruments. But none of them play those instuments -- there is no banjo or sousaphone or flute on Surrealistic Pillow. It's just a visual joke. Only Grace's expression gives it away. I just noticed this after fifty years and am absolutely gobsmacked. They say that he who laughs last laughs best, but he may get a reputation for being slow on the uptake. That is how I feel right now.

Whats up with the lyrics in the description? It has nothing in common with what's in the song.

This is an unreleased track which features Signe Anderson with Mary Balin on vocals. It was included on their 1974 comp collection LP entitled "Early Tracks."
