6:13 - "Louise, is the Reverend hard to please?" [Monty Python's Terry Jones, pops out in full drag from the background to chime in with...] " You're telling me! " ~ (BTW - The very first picture when you Google search "Terry Jones drag"  is perfect for what I had in mind! :-D )

Gabriel says now that he thinks there's too much going on in this song lyrically speaking. I have to say I totally disagree. It's a feckin masterpiece. Lyrically and musically.

Who could possibly doubt Phil's drumming?? Just listen to Brand X and all the stuff he's done with Genesis! He's one of the BEST in prog rock history!!

Yup. He was a true master of the drums. Him and Bill Bruford are my favorites.

I think "Selling England By The Pound" is the best-produced Gabriel-era Genesis album, especially noticeable in the drums. The subtlety of Phil's drumming is captured perfectly, and the mix of the whole album is tight and well-balanced.  Mike Rutherford has to be one of the most underrated bassists ever. His bass tone on this album (and this song in particular) is soooo good. Much brighter than on previous albums. The drums/bass interplay on this song is amazing.

So many of my friends simply don't "get" Genesis of this period. Twelve minutes? Every second of those twelve minutes is a treasure of lyrics and musicianship.

Battle of Epping Forest is just simply a masterpiece. Wish I would have been born earlier to see it played live.

This should be considered one of the best drums in prog rock history.

No doubt. Only Phil could take all these odd ball time signatures and actually make them groove. Just plain bad ass. People forget what a phenomenal drummer he is.

First few times I ever heard this I thought it was not that great and muddled.. but the more I have heard it over the years I appreciate different bits more and more.

Phil Collins, great drummer. More people should know him from stuff like this, instead of his mid '80s and beyond output.

Doesn't matter how often I hear this song, I always marvel and Collins' drumming.

It truly just makes me want to cry. I think of the friends who listened and loved this song along side of me and the entire Selling England By The Pound album. All but one they are gone. For me? This is one the album I love the most. I don't know how else to explain it. Friends? The time? Production and .... ? I cannot explain it. But I know every word, feel every note and ...? While stationed in Ansbach, Germany in 1985-1987 I listened to this song on my "Sony Walkman" during the Cold World while driving my Company Platoon Leader through Marktredvitz, Germany. I am 54 now and I will simply never forget, never.
