The 1st part of the song gives you turn of the 20th century “Shug Avery” vibes. The 2nd part is mid-20th century vocal jazz. Then, the 3rd part brings it all the way round to modern day neo-soul. It’s both a journey through time as well as an homage to the evolution of black American soul music from the past century, showcasing it’s evolution in lyricism and feeling. What a masterpiece. What an artist.
