"Yaşasın" means "hooray" in Turkish. As far as I can remember, David saw the word "yaşasın" written on a wall while walking in Berlin and he called the Turkish embassy to ask what it meant. They told Bowie that it meant "long live". We know all this from an interview he gave to the BBC radio programme Star Special in 1979. "Yaşasın" when used alone means "hooray", a word you shout when you're happy or excited, however there's also a possibility that the writing on the wall David saw was not "yaşasın" alone and some sentence like "yaşasın Türkiye!" or "yaşasın barış!" which translates to "long live peace!". In that case "long live" would be the correct translation, but otherwise it translates to "hooray". Slogans like "long live sth", "shoulder to shoulder against fascism" etc. (mostly revolutionist/leftist or rightist slogans) especially in the form of street writings were popular in the Turkish society as there was a huge conflict between rightists and leftists in Turkey in the 70s and 80s that eventually led to a military coup in 1980.
