Anyone listening in 2019? This jam always brings me back. When life was a breeze. A great song to reflect on things when times are hard. At least for me. Stay blessed
Even if you never knew the lyrics of this song, the emotional heart of the piece is fully expressed in this extraordinary performance. This is perfection.
I came to love Coleman's playing when I was 11 years old, Ben's some years later. Oscar's, Herb's and Ray's also years later. I learned to sing "Pennies From Heaven" at 5 yrs. Started with piano at about 9, started with Bass at 11 or 12 getting free lessons. Started singing for money at about 11, played bass for money at 16 when I joined Local 802. Now I'm 87 years old after having played and sang for many years, including in Army Special Services. These guys are among my favorites almost all my life. "It Never Entered My Mind's" a great song.
From Bach to Basie, or from Tchaikovsky to Tatum, I've never heard anything lovelier, deeper, more emotional, more sensual , more poetic, sculpted, shaped and sent with a blessing. Here is a universal lesson in sax playing, singing a song from within.
Ben Webster's sound resonates with a strong but gentle tone that makes you think that you are dreaming. Every note spins past you like a gentle breeze. The Hawk has a more robust and forthcoming sound that sweeps through like a deep, calm force. Reminds me of a peaceful sunsets. Soft sunshine and cool night :)
