Never got to see Cannonball, but saw Nat with Woody Herman's "Anglo- American Herd" in Manchester, U.K. when my father took me to my first Jazz concert sometime in the late 50s or early 60s......Charlie Byrd was on guitar !
Lois Hayes has great instincts when it comes to building a drum solo. He lets a gesture cycle through a few times without embellishment, to let it sink in just how deep it is, then he lets it evolve into the next thing. While doing that, he doesn't wear out the ears with too much high-end crashes, that we can stay in the zone longer and find those crisp tones beautiful when he brings them back in.
Fantastic! So great to see Victor with Adderleys - IMO best pianist they ever had and I love Barry, Bobby Timmons and Zawinul.
Thanks so much for this, Bob!
