Conrad Salinger's orchestrations for the Astaire/Charisse performance of "DitD," in the 1953 "The Band Wagon," borrowed heavily from this arrangement. One of the greatest dance numbers in film history!

Nothing evokes the Big Band Era better than this gem of a recording. They aimed so much higher in those days and sometimes they hit the mark.

One of my favorite recordings from the Big Band Era, and the best version of this song! I heard it last night while I lay in bed. It ison a tape of Artie's greatest hits.

Great arrangement, and the harmonic borrowing, in the Intro and Outro, from Stravinsky's "Firebird Suite," is astonishingly clever. Incidentally, whole religious philosophies have been developed to deal with the Human Dilemma, as articulated in the lyric of this great song, and as this performance is strictly instrumental, here's that very wise lyric: "Dancing in the dark 'Til the tune ends, We're dancing in the dark, And it soon ends... We're waltzing in the wonder of why we're here... Time hurries by, we're here, and gone... Lookin' for the light... Of a new love, To brighten up the night, I have you, Love, And we can face the music, together, Dancing in the dark..." As you enjoy this marvelous music, think on that.

From the pen of the great Lennie Hayton, who did the bulk of the arranging for the 40/41 Shaw orchestra. About as perfect a dance record as any band ever recorded. The interpolation of the 'Firebird" quotes fore and aft were genious. Shaw was a Stravinsky freak, and it wouldn't surprise me if he put the bug in Lennie's ear--he usually penned a sketch first and then handed it over to the arranger to "make it work." And oh yes.....it works.

Did Artie Shaw ever pull a girl up on stage and dance with her at the end of performing this song?
