Prior to his vicious imprisonment, Art was the finest sax player on the planet. He could weave through the theme with an originanlity that was intelligent, whimsical and beautiful. There will never be quite such a master - and such a decent guy in jazz.
Of course he can't. Because he is not Charlie Parker. He is Art Pepper. They are two completely different animals and are both amazing in their own way.
Comparisons are a bit silly, really.Different hoses fordifferent courses - the same with men. Art was not experimenting, he's become a fulfilled musician, and just played in his inimitable way of expressing his emotions. As for technical skill, he was among the most proficient sax player in musical history.
Apples can't compete with oranges. Two wildly different animals, Bird and Art. Pepper, Desmond, Parker....the three defined alto sax in the 50's, but they each did it in completely different ways.
When I think of musicians like the great Art Pepper, I am instantly sad. The man was such a wonderful musician but suffered so much because of the drug thing that ruined his life. He should never have been sent to prison, but to a good rehabilitation program. Bless him. RIP dear brother Art.
