Bebop at its a spiritual and equestrian zenith, and a stellar tribute to the legacy of the Max Roach Clifford Brown band, that manages to evoke and extend the original template, not simply recreate it. A young Mulgrew Miller's rhythmic harmonic impetus makes a sextet sound like a big band, and has there ever been a more commanding trumpeter than Woody Shaw, who like Miller, left us all too soon.
