While I quite like this version, let’s be clear: it is most definitely not Irish, nor ’Celtic’ (whatever that is supposed to mean; Celtic being a family of languages). Just because The Dubliners recorded a version of Sam Hall this doesn’t make it Irish. The original Sam Hall was composed by an English Music Hall comic minstrel, WG Ross in the 1840s. This song was itself an adaptation of a traditional English song, Jack Hall. Jack Hall was a burglar, though not a murderer. He was hanged at Tyburn, in London, in 1707. I know some won’t give a toss about the song’s (or any song’s) ancestry, but other find it both interesting and important.
