The story goes that when Montgomery was awarded a Grammy for his album, "Going Out Of My Head," and when accepted he muttered, "Where were you when I was playing?"
There is nothing wrong with any of his studio work, but his "Live" recordings are freer, more spontaneous and the improvisation above what is in his studio recordings, which are over arranged and much more commercial. "Smokin' At the Half Note" is a good example of his full talent on display and for the jazz purist far more satisfying.
During his lifetime he was criticized for his "commercial" work. One article in Downbeat asked, "Will we ever hear anything good from Wes Montgomery again?" But neither Downbeat nor his critics were paying for his groceries. Commercial music sells. Wes had to eat.
He was taken from us way too soon. Who knows? Had he made enough from the commercial music we might have been treated to more and better from this wildly talented musician.
