Lord the cotton was high, the years rolled past our door
The years rolled past our door, willie would play and laura would sing
and the corn was growing fine
lord the cotton was high
And we went our separate ways, and i ll get laura mae
Till i saw willie down town the other day, you play all right
and the corn was growing fine
lord the cotton was high
the years rolled past our door
Lord the cotton was high, and the corn was growing fine
and the corn was growing fine
you play all right
We sit out on the front porch, but that was another place and another time
this is another place and another time
And the corn was growing fine, and the corn was growing fine Joe, and i d bring over my guitar
But that was another place and another time, and the corn was growing fine, they took back what they d given
and that made me feel so good
And i ll get laura mae, do y all need anything from town?
and i ll get laura mae
and the corn was growing fine
So we all moved off, but that was another place and another time
And we all knew we d have to move, and we heard from them no more
You play all right, y all stop by tonight, in a shack just like our shack
willie and laura mae jones
And we heard from them no more, but that was another place and another time Jones, but that was another place and another time
The cotton was high, but that was another place and another time
So we all moved off, and the corn was growing fine
But that was another place and another time, to cook up some corn pone, lord the cotton was high
The years rolled past our land, the cotton was high, willie would play and laura would sing
When I first heard this I was a schoolboy in Tottenham, North London, which must have been absurdly removed from where Tony Joe White was from, but I instantly recognised this as a classic song.
Beautiful song. Tony is one of my favorites. I met him twice, and he was cool. One of my favourite lyrics in any song ever "when you live off the land, you don't have time for anyone's colour" I love it. I'm 46 and from New Zealand, and love this guy. We have our issues here, but treated the Maori people, even though in the past it was crap, a bit better than most
Tony Joe White .... an artist who can show you what life is about ....
his melodies, his lyrics, his singing, his guitar playing, his mouth harp, his voice ....
this man knows what life and music is about!!!
