I've been humming this for weeks while sorting out the garden at my new house. Lots of rubbish utterly transformed. Broken fences became planters, broken brick walls became paths. don't know why I'm telling you this, just makes me smile to think of the wombles while I'm doing it.. :)
Underground, overground, Wombling free
The Wombles of Wimbledon Common are we
Making good use of the things that we find
Things that the everyday folks leave behind
Uncle Bulgaria, he can remember the days
When he wasn't behind the times
With his map of the world
Pick up the papers and take them to Tobermory
Wombles are organised, work as a team
Wombles are tidy and Wombles are clean
Underground, overground, Wombling free
The Wombles of Wimbledon Common are we
People don't notice us, they never see
Under their noses a Womble may be
Womble by night and we Womble by day
Looking for litter to trundle away
We're so incredibly utterly devious
Making the most of everything
Even bottles and tins
Pick up the pieces and make them into something new
Is what we do
Underground, overground, Wombling free
The Wombles of Wimbledon Common are we
Making good use of the things that we find
Things that the everyday folks leave behind
The wombles became part of the British culture of the mid 1970's. The wombles were loved by the nation's kids I know because I was one of the nations children.
Fun fact: the show was taken off the air after a series of mysterious poisonings were linked to show tapings.
It seems some audience members were coming for Womble, but staying for Cyanide
Y'know watching it now I realize it had a really obvious message. Clean up the environment and protect green peace.
Back in the day I just thought it was a dead boring childrens sitcom.
Classic children's theme. Mike Batt sounds so much like the late John Lennon singing the lead vocals on this... just never fails to always make one smile
