2:11 from this point in the song, mary's voice is going into a Leslie speaker? The spinning effect. Lot's of guitar parts were recorded using that process
My favourite Shangri-Las song. Unlike a few of the posters here I love the freak-out in the middle. It's like Jim Morrison or Steppenwolf barged in and took over the studio for a minute or so.
I love this song! One of my Shangri-las's favourite! Thanks for the upload. The part from the middle remember me "Baron Saturday" by The Pretty Things. So psychedelic.
I cannot find an album nor a 45 for my juke box finding Shangri la vinyl is like panning for gold. Hit and miss, but when you hit, you know you struck it rich!
This was The Shangri-Las first 45 on their new label Mercury. Was even played on WNEW-FM when it was free form. Must've believed this girl group was morphing into a great progressive band. Compared to their previous hits, the novelty ones & the angst-ridden ones this was a work of pop art. Moody, haunting & an ingenious arrangement. The instrumental break was quite intense for the time for a group like The Shangri-Las. Surprised the hell out of me. What a talented bunch these ladies were.
There are songs that really capture that 'Summer' vibe and this definitely fills the bill. The Shangs and Shadow were changing with the times and this comes through as well. I just discovered them, beyond 'Leader of the Pack' about 2 months ago and I'm addicted. Did they put out an album with this single or were these thier last recordings? These girls were truly Groovy.
did anyone else wonder why this briefly became a nightmare in the middle?? cheers for the upload, die hard fan and i hadnt heard this before. the b side is definitely better tho :)
I love this song! It was wasted as a B-side! Both of their Mercury singles had great sides. The other one was "Footsteps on the Roof." Wish they'd been available in stereo, but only mono/distorting 45s were released. :(
shangri la la la la la la...top gals...fooled em all...listen to that break...girls were absolutely unique never ever ever ever be another ...two sisters and a set of identical twins...positively great...shadow morton on the production, unheralded!...how can the assumption be that girl groups were over by 63--64?(very similar to the outlandish argument that rock n roll itself died from like 58 to the beatles )... the supremes were just starting to fire out hits via H-D-H, and these gals, the greatest of all didnt hit the charts til 64? failed arguement...long live the Shangri-las...drama as its finest...just a note, was playing ""you can never go home again, my wife had never heard it and she started balling, imploring it as the saddest song ever...thank you so very much for everything you have left us. ....and thats called "glad"!!!!!!!!!
I've seen people cut on the pyschedelic bridge, but it was common in the era, re: the Pretty Things mentioned, and others such as
"Heroes and Villans" by The Beach Boys...it's kinda cool actually
i'm not sure which photo you are referring to. it might be the one with just one of the twins and the other two girls with long blonde hair. one is mary weiss and the other one was betty weiss. we are use to always seeing the two twins in photos.
