Westerberg and the boys along with Bob Mould's Husker Du were great examples of the MN music scene back in the late '80s. I saw the Replacements in Tuscaloosa AL back in '90 on one of their college tours, great show that lasted about 90 to 100 minutes with open seating so the fraternity boys turned an area of Coleman Coliseum in front of the stage into a slam dance/mosh pit; interesting to watch from the Mezzanine.... The Replacements also played a venue toward downtown called the Chukker a couple of times before they played at the U, I think one time back to back with the Indigo Girls of all bands; talk about a contrast in Indie Rock; the Replacements with their punk roots and the Indigo gal;s with their folk rock sound out of the ATL suburbs. All great concerts. There is simply no replacing bands like the Replacements! Nothing in this era of Indie/Alternative rock can come close to their sound! Thanks for posting this!
If he was from Venus, would he feed us with a spoon?
If he was from Mars, then that'd be cool
Standing right on campus, would he stamp us in a file?
Hangin' down in Memphis all the while
And children by the million sing for Alex Chilton
When he comes 'round
They sing, "I'm in love
What's that song?
Yeah, I'm in love
With that song"
So we will rape and pillage in a village of his choice
Invisible man who can sing in a visible voice
Feeling like a hundred bucks, exchanging good lucks face to face
Checkin' his stash by the trash at St. Mark's Place
And children by the million sing for Alex Chilton
When he comes 'round and 'round
They sing, "I'm in love
What's that song?
Oh, I'm in love
With that song
I never travel far
Without a little Big Star
Runnin' 'round the house, Mickey Louse and tarot cards
Falling asleep with a flop pop video on
And if he was from Venus, would he meet us on the moon?
If he died in Memphis, then that'd be cool, babe
And children by the million wait for Alex Chilton
And come around 'round
They sing, "I'm in love what's that song?
I'm in love
With that song
I'm in love
What's that song?
Yeah, I'm in love, with that song?"
Oh
Come on
I want to share this story on this song, please, just I need to do it for my own well being.
My favorite teacher in all of my highschool career passed away today. He was so into music, it was almost a disease. He played this song the first day of my junior year, and I was drumming it along on my desk and he was in absolute shock that I knew it. From that day, every day, I was known as "Alex." in the halls, in class, all around. My real name is Richard.
Rest in peace, Mr. Karoly.
Hadn't known this band until just recently when I saw a Billie Joe (Green Day) interview, in which he cited them as one of his early inspirations.
Amazing song! Gotta love the intro riff!
