A lot of people I knew couldn't get into the Brecker Brothers. So I had to recommend David Sanborn and Steve Khan albums as a way to introduce their music style.
just to clarify,.. back in the day when i was a funky dj,. never let a night go by without sneaking,.. on the tunnel and the mix,.. the funky bass lines,.. can you dig it!!!
I'm serious I heard this when I was 10 yrs of age, I couldn't get anyone to buy it, I kept listening to the jazz stations to catch the group name I couldn't when I was 33 yrs of age I went over several jazz albums to check for supporting and contributing artists to find those unfamiliar to me, low and behold thanks to computers I found it, went straight to the record shop to get it after work. serious no jive. that was 1997. Love this!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I remember tokin' in my neighbor's basement in the fall of 1975 listening to Brecker Brothers, Herbie Hancock, Stevie Wonder, Van Morrison, Led Zeppelin, Yusef Latif, and who knows else.
His German mother once opened the door with "What is dat schmell down there?"
"Incense, mom. It helps us to relax."
"OK." (door shuts)
After the band DREAMS, the Brecker Brothers release their 1st eponymous album. I had a vinyl LP copy of this record & I enjoyed it a lot! This track, "Sneakin' Up Behind You", was their concession to the pop-disco genre already brewing by 1975 (the rest of the album is more funk-laced jazz fusion!)
Loved this song on record and was blessed to see them perform this live in concert at least twice. Both times at clubs (I think The Bottom Line in NYC and “My Father’s Place” in Roslyn, NY).
I remember playing this on KRST-FM in Albuquerque as a jock in the mid 70's . Cool to here it some 40 years later. Still sounds great.
John or Jonathan as I was known on the air.
Back in the day, talented people actually made real music like this. Most of todays manufactured performers would never have made cut Still holds up after almost 30 years
