One of the greatest performances in the rock era, and captured in beautiful color and magnificent sound. We often here of magical performances and have no record of them, but here, we have it, forever.

Yall come down to Ole Dixie and hang out with us for a little bit. You might discover some things about the natives and our culture, but more importantly a little something about yourself. There is not place on Earth as loving, as warm, and as inviting as Ole Dixie. Yes we have a crosses to bear like any culture but we sure do love this country, each other, and our ways of life.

I just can't believe that almost 4% of people don't like this. This is music. This is one of the greatest performances of real music ever.

I m proud to say that on September 7th of this year...last Friday , I was driving in southern Arkansas ..close to where Levon Helm was raised ..I looked up at the road sign, that said I was on the Levon Helm Memorial Highway..That made me feel good inside ...It was in Helena, Arkansas....Home of the Blues Festival... I have always enjoyed and admired Levon...we all miss him...He was a Southern Treasure...

This American Experience....I love my country more than my own LIFE. I wore many hats.... Marine...pilot...fire fighter...skydiver...scuba diver...prospector... writer...hunter...builder... GOD has indeed smiled on my life....MOST IMPORTANTLY... HE ALLOWED ME TO BE AN AMERICAN... THE GREATEST PRIVILEGE IN THE UNIVERSE! GOD HAS BLESSED OUR AMERICA!!!

My favorite song and performance too.  My great grandfather x3 is buried in Richmond at Howards Grove , He was a confederate soldier, He died just a few months before it fell. No matter your stance on this subject. History will forever stand unchanged. Those people were not just fighting for slavery. At the time it was their way of life. I wont defend any of it however, I will say this, That's our history and America should never forget that American's died for what they believed. Right or wrong that's what happened. This song embodies the suffering the south endured. It is surely Not a thing of the past, it will forever stand as our heritage. The south didn't rise again. It learned to stand again and we are all better for it. God Bless you Levon Helm you made a difference in peoples hearts with your music.

I’m not going to complain that they don’t make music like this anymore; I’m just grateful that it got made period.

A profound, heart-wrenching song...for me, anyway. Listen to the lyrics: this isn't the lament of a wealthy plantation/slave owner, demagogue, or political firebrand shouting that the South will rise again. It's the struggle of a regular guy trying to remain stoic in the face of his world being turned upside down by war. At least that's how I interpret it. One of my favorite songs ever.

I so appreciate Levon singing this song. My middle name is Lee. I will make the opportunity to tell people I am named after General Robert E. Lee. I am not sure if I am. But my grandma is from Georgia! Grandma died long ago.✝️

No songs will ever written as well or performed as well as this live transmission ever. Forget about the Yankees and the Rebels. This is and was heartfelt and would not transcribe or happen today because of all the furor that would come down. It's a Goddamn song. Performed by a band who was great. Levon sang his ass off and the Band complied. STFU and enjoy. I'm sure I've been targeted now.

According to The Band's Robbie Robertson, he wrote this song while he was staying at Levon Helm's parents house in Arkansas. Robbie has stated in numerous interviews and books over the decades that Levon's father, Nell Helm was a very proud Southerner who told him many stories about his life growing up on a cotton farm as well as stories about the lives of his ancestors. Nell Helm proudly said to Robbie one day, "You know what Robbie? The South will rise again someday." Robbie then took all of Nell's stories, emotions and feelings of Southern pride and wrote this song. This was Robbie's tribute to the American South and all the many proud Southern men and women who thought & felt exactly like Nell Helm did.
