his blues playing is extraordinary ... must say I'm a bit surprised after listening to mostly his solid rock guitar all these years, but like they say, it all comes from the blues ..
Keith Richards had wanted his pal Steve Marriott to replace the departed Mick Taylor, but Jagger gave it a thumbs down following the rehearsal, not wanting to risk being upstaged by this pint-sized dynamo.
The guys playing in the band are like "how lucky are we???" Marriott was an absolute monster and humble pie in their prime were an amazing live band. Such a shame bad managers constantly ripped him off his whole career.
This is quite possibly the best version of this song EVER RECORDED!!! That voice, that guitar-playing, and emotion(stage presence) are all superb! Today we are treated to mindless dicks who "sample", read steal, others' work. SM was a true virtuoso!
I'm here to tell you that Steve Marriott is THE great unsung hero of English music. Not only was he a GREAT guitarist -he is rightfully remembered as an excellent songwriter -and is thoroughly un-appreciated as such (back me Noel). He was/is an amazing singer as well. Just an all-around legend who is unrealized and un-heralded. I love him -always. Ogden's Nut-Gone-Flake is a work of GENIUS.
To think, he underestimated his own guitar work. The man was an insanely talented musician and jaw dropping vocalist and eye catching performer. RIP Beautiful man.
I'm proud to remember that a young Stevie - showed me my first lick - he'd learnt from 'Jeff' the day before at some gig.
Steve showed me how to play the Scotty Moore lick over an open E chord - all down at J60's in Manor Park. God Bless him
