today I finally realized the keyboard melody in the beginning is based on the Earl of Salisbury, by William Byrd. I always sensed something familiar or nostalgic in the melody from A Certain Kind, and though I started listening to John Renbourn's interpretation of Earl of Salisbury at around the same period that I started listening to Soft Machine, I never made the connection.
