Not to overstate the obvious but, It's amazing the level of musicality he had at such a young age. I think he was more like 17,18 here? He really could play though.
Thanks for this. Shuggie isn't well-enough remembered and Dunbar's my favorite drummer...a guy with real chops (he played for Zappa pre-Journey, after all) who could play the blues without OVER-playing the blues.
If you like cult artists, then I highly recommend Bronx child prodigy and genius, singer/songwriter Laura Nyro, who recorded her first LP in 1966 aged 18. She performed at Monterey Pop in 1967 with Hendrix etc. Electric Ladyland by Hendrix and Nyro's 2nd LP 'Eli and the Thirteenth Confession' (1968) are probably the most sublime musical achievements in rock. Eli is universally considered by critics as a masterpiece, and they rate her 3rd LP New York Tendaberry as even better. Eli is piano based, musically very complex, with very soulful singing. All the musicians are jazzmen. It is nothing like you have ever heard and will take a few listens to attune. Many artists had massive hits with Nyro songs, especially the 5th Dimension, such as Stoned Soul Picnic and Wedding Bell Blues. She is covered to this day and sampled by rappers. In the music industry she is considered one of its greatest ever talents, is loved by everyone, and her influence is vast. Some of her most famous fans are Miles Davis, Prince, Dylan, Alice Cooper, Elton John, Joni Mitchell, Steely Dan, Todd Rundgren.
I was a little girl.. When this song came out.. And it was played in my house.. All the time.. I remember on the weekend.. My parents would have company in the basement playing card.. And this song would be playing on the record player.. Didn't appericate as a kid.. Now that I am grown.. I bump this in my car all the time.. When I pull up somewhere the old timers give me 2 thumbs up.. Thank you for posting this..
