Oh, what a shame that your pockets did bleed on St. Valentines
And you sat in a chair thinking:
Boy, Im such a prince!
Well lifes a train that goes from February on day by day
But its making a stop on April first.
And you will believe in love
And all that its supposed to be.
But just until the fish start to smell
And youre struck down by a hammer.
Sure you were swift when the handsome Greek boys dropped by with gifts
You are suave thanks to the ribbons that open sesame
But in the stars and closer to home than in every planet
It aint hard for me and dear Jo Jo to see.
So let it all go by looking at the sky
Wondering if there are clouds and stuff in hell.
Awesome song. My local radio station in Philadelphia played this all the time when this CD came out in 1998. They still play it! Rufus is so damn talented!!!
"Why only .6 million views", I ask, simultaneously realizing we live in a world where a fish is digitally animated singing "no diggity" to a beer bottle.
"You will believe in love and all that it's supposed to be." Isn't it funny how we keep hoping?
The part about the fish starting to stink is based on the French tradition of placing a fish on a person's back on April 1 as a joke. It was called "Poisson D'avril!" or "April Fish," and traditionally involved a real fish! :)
