As a budding jazzbo, I used to be down on Whitman. He had strings and, of course, he and his men were so white, and enjoyed so much popularity than the Black innovators of jazz.
Well, years later, I've gotten over my politically thick-skulled political motivated rejection of Whitman's music and other "sweet jazz" bands. This is lively, and very elegant music.
Thanks, Jazz Girl, for another fine posting.
The great things about the Whiteman band are the irreplaceable solo gems of Bix Beiderbecke and the emergence of the greatest ballad singer of all time...I think his name was Harry!
