Mika specifically changed it to Good guy instead of just gay guys because it's not about the "gay guys" persé. It's about the men who blurred the borders, changed the rules of the game. The men who did what they want, and didn''t give a damn about what people thought. James Dean, Bowie, Warhole, and all the others he mentioned, they didn't compromise, didn't try to fit to some norm society put upon them, and that's what this song is about, and that's why I love it.

When I heard that David Bowie had passed away today, I thought of this song and I think that this song might be a tribute to him. Thanks Mika for this wonderful song.

This song very subtly alludes to the AIDs crisis in the 90s, when government's turned their back's on tens of thousands of people's deaths because they were gay. "It's not the cowboys that are missing any more / that problem was already old in ’94," in 1995, the AIDs crisis in the US reached it's highest rate of mortality at over 40,000 dead. "if we are all in the gutter it doesn’t change who we are.. we're looking up at the stars," and Oscar Wilde quote that may also allude to queer people being seen as inherently dirty. This is very much a song about the erasure of queer history after literally loosing an entire generation.

I love how he says, "Don't be offended this might seem a little wrong," before saying "Where have all the gay guys gone?" So polite. LMAO.

“We are all in the gutter, but some of us are looking at the stars.” ― Oscar Wilde, Lady Windermere's Fan Took me a while until I remembered what about the chorus seemed so familiar.
