Yeah, I hear ya. I keep almost all their records in pretty heavy rotation, myself, and I don't try and rank them either. The way I see it, they all have their moments; Combustication is perfect for a party on Saturday night, while Notes from the Underground is great on a relaxed Sunday morning. I think it's all the mores impressive that their albums are so different from one another. John, Billy and Chris don't make anything but good music together.
