He is NOT underrated he is maybe THE MAN among many of the other top tenorists like:
Coleman Hawkins, Sonny Rollins, John Coltrane, Ben Webster, Dexter Gordon. You can't compare them - all you just have to do is listen and like(dislike) them for what they did(do).
I guess I'll have to change my plan
I should have realized there'd be another man
I overlooked that point completely
Until the big affair began
Before I knew where I was at
I found myself upon the shelf and that was that
I tried to reach the moon but when I got there
All that I could get was the air
My feet are back upon the ground
I lost the one girl I'd found
Well the rumor is that they weren't lovers but friends. Lester Young was a married man and Billie had been involved in several abusive relationship throughout their long association. The truth probably lies somewhere inbetween. They were probably very good friends that got close on more than one occasion. They did have periods of time in which they weren't speaking (during the 1957 sound of jazz telecast for one) but were, to the best of my knowledge just friends.
I'm a trombone player too and I love Lester Young, never heard this one before. I think This Years Kisses might be on the same album, it's great please post it (if it is) and let me know, I'll be your friend for life! What a great band!!!
