Bad material? Kiki Dee took time to find her feet musically, but in the 1970s she hit a solid patch that produced a lot of fine and frequently excellent tracks (Loving and Free is a lost classic album imo).
It's sadly ironic that, while Dusty Springfield floundered musically and personally in the 1970s, Kiki came into her own after having been an also-ran in the '60s in terms of commercial/critical success.

I remember in 1964 the mods used to go into the 'Alex', the ballroom of the Alexandra Hotel in Bradford, it was at the bottom of Great Horton Road opposite the Windsor Baths, now a car park. Kiki Dee was a regular in there. She used to go in with a blonde foreign girl who I believe eventually married Ray Davis of The Kinks.
