You’ve been picked and it’s over What’s that chip on your shoulder
Outside were solid rainbows Inside is where the heart grows
Picking up the pieces Something more to believe in
PRECHORUS:
As you search the embers Think what you’ve had Remember
Hang on Don’t you let go now You know with every heartbeat We love
Nothing comes easy Hang on Ask the lonely
You’ve got some fascination With your high expectations
This love is your obsession Your heart Your past possession
Let down your defenses Won’t be up to the one who cares
PRECHORUS:
CHORUS:
When you’re feeling love’s unfair You just ask the lonely
When you’re lost in deep despair You just ask the lonely
LEAD
CHORUS:
CHORUS:
Ask the lonely
When you’re down in deep despair When you’re down in deep despair
Ask the lone-lone-lone-lone-lone-lone-lonely
Lone-lone-lone-lone-ly--- Lonely
I really can't pin down any one favorite Journey song, they're all fantastic, including this one! Steve Perry's voice has no equal, Journey isn't the same without him. :)
1:16 "Lay down your defenses..." My favorite line from this song, in terms of melody. I mean, who else but Steve Perry would choose that particular series of notes to sing that phrase? That's a huge part of what separates him from all the other "belters" of that era, imo. He had such great judgement. He knew when to hold long notes and when to dial it back a bit, etc., to serve the mood of the song he was helping create. Just a fantastic singer and artist.
I was mountain climbing one day and this song just popped into my head, it was like the soundtrack to the day. How many bands can do that consistently through the years?
This is such an underrated song. I LOVE the melody and Neal's amazing guitar solos. Steve's vocals are fantastic as always and that short acapella part coming out of the bridge and Jonathan's piano chords to fade out are great as well.
One of Journey's best in my opinion. Journey is one of those bands that I can't get enough of. And this song is no exception.
This song fits my life. Want to know something, ask me, I am the lonely.
But that's why the make vodka.
The drop at 2:40 gives me the excited chills every single damn time I play this song. I remember listening to journey greatest hits when I was like 10 with my dad, as we drove in his Lincoln town car. kinda kills me when people reference journey and only mention don't stop believing. They're missing out on some real gems.
Steve Perry is the best American rock vocalist..ever..Better front men and stronger vocalists have been and are still out there. My list would include...Plant, Halford, Mercury. DIO... but there has never been an American who belts it out like Steve...
