This song marked my life and my adolescence, I still remember when I first met her almost 4 years ago, she was in my city looking for her real parents, and 2 weeks later we started dating already... It was so fast but so intense... When she found them, she had to go back to her city (cause her flight was already booked) and I had only a few days to think of something to give her, so maybe she wouldn't forget me until we could met again.. So I took Continuum and recorded it to a 2gb MicroSD and gave her to listen during the flight (my mom still calls me asking for that MicroSD)... She loved it so much (this song especially) that she stills listen to it.. Today we barely talk and she has a child. I'm totally fine alone, but this song always comes up with good memories to me. I listened to it for hours looking for a way to stop that plane

I was listening to this song one night and couldn't shake the feeling that every time he started singing, the song sped up by a small amount. Just recently I confirmed my suspicions with a metronome. When not singing, the song consistently rests around 88 bpm; and while singing, it consistently rests around 93 bpm. This could just be from nerves or the fact that John doesn't have a drummer keeping time but taking into account the lyrics of the song could shed light on another meaning. I think John Mayer intentionally speeds up while singing to give the listener a feeling of time slipping by faster than desired. Given the fact that the entire song is about struggling with mortality and the unstoppable passage of time, it's not crazy to assume this effect was intentional. Just goes to show you how much effort this man puts into his music and live performances.

John Mayer is proof that there is no formula to singing. His tone is all over the place and so is his tempo. Most people say this is a bad thing about singers but John Mayer is amazing. He's unorthodox, but he pulls it off amazingly.

It's only when you try to learn his songs that you realise how much of a talented genius this guy really is

This song really makes you rethink so much of your life and your priorities. Ultimately we’re only on this train for a short couple of stops. As corny as it sounds, enjoy your life, do what makes you happy and love who you love.

One of his best songs! Love it! Especially love the line that says: " So scare of getting older, I'm only good at being young"

A chair, a mic and a guitar. What a performance and what an incredible sound he's got live.

This song came out when I was 19 yrs old. The second verse hit me like a ton of bricks as I finally had begun seeing the ageing in my father's face and it got me thinking of life without him in it. Lit a fire under my ass to work harder and make him proud before he goes... He's 75 now and every so often I listen to this to re-light that fire. tonight was one of those nights.

John's lyrics are some of the most intuitive and relatable lyrics of any songwriter I've listened to. His music has always spoken directly to me throughout the various stages of my life, whether it be through meaningful lyrics or inspiring instrumentals. This is one of the most meaningful songs to me in recent years. The thought of transitioning into the middle stage of life is so full of mystery, and this song captures the fear of the unknown perfectly. So scared of getting older, I'm only good at being young, so I play the numbers game to find a way to say that life has just begun. It's interesting how the meaning of a song can evolve over time as life your experiences shape your views and feelings.
