The sound reproduction on this recording is very bad. I am having a hard time even believing that this JLH. The guitar sounds somewhat like Hooker but the voice sounds more like Lightnin' Hopkins. Could be just the bad recording making it sound that way. I'm going to be looking for a better copy of this song. Thanks for posting it anyway.
...a lot of his 40s and 50s recordings are way more distorted than this
obviously he's incorporated lightnins style... the lyrical themes are lightnin too - of all the impersonations of hopkins, i think JLH's is rare in that he outdoes even Hopkins himself
No doubt, he's John Lee Hooker. Chords, tuning, rithm, thumb hammering....all is Lee Hooker style. Does someone know the lyrics?
"Tell me, god forgive a black man, most anything he do,
Tell me, god forgive a black man, most anything he do,
Well if that's the case, i'm gonna kill this woman, i'm gonna drop down
on her bed.
Soon this morning, woman come walkin'.
That woman come, walkin' in.
Yes soon this morning, woman come walk, walkin' in.
Yes I was laying here thinking, trying to, make it up in my mind.
Well and If I kill this woman, get down, on her knees.
Yes, yes, she knows.
Know for certain, know she ain't doin' me right.
Yes.. house ain't never clean. My supper ain't never done.
Yes, house ain't clean, supper ain't never done.
Yeah got so mad this morning..
Broke to the wall right through here,
Grabbed my shotgun, I started to.. mow that woman down.
Yeah broke to the wall, started to .. mow that woman.
Mow that woman down.
Well now, conscience told me, Lord, to allow her one more chance.."
