I can always remember my mother doris lightfoot,( my best friend in the whole wide world) telling me when she took me to a dance in dumfrieshire, jimmy shand was playing there with his band, and me being the youngest in the hall that night gave my mam a 10 shilling note, at the ripe old age of one year old.
Jimmy was once staying in a guest house. He asked the landlady for some honey for his bread. She brought him a tiny pot of honey. Jimmy's comment was "Ah Mrs, I see that you keep a bee!"
Goodbye grandad our memories will live on and I will never forget you grandad aka Jimmy Shand I will always love u and I know how to play the accordion now and I play your one love you x
This is not my kind of music (I am a performer of jazz and a house DJ), but Jimmy Shand has my greatest respect. He played for about 60 years, and, his music brought pleasure to a lot of people. It sounds bright and cheerful, and is very evocative. Everything is flawlessly executed. Look at him in this video. Almost motionless and detached, yet this music is pouring out. Five stars out of five.
Will Justin Bieber, or Britney Spears perform for 60 years?
I am now of the opinion that this should be Scotland's national anthem, but then again, I've had too much to drink. Sometimes though it's at times like this that the best ideas come through. Christ, it would confuse the world if we had it.
