We’ve been runnin' away from somethin' we both know
We’ve long run out of things to say and I think I’d better go
So don’t be gettin' excited oh-when you hear that slammin' door
Cause there’ll be one less set of footsteps on your floor in the mornin'
And we’ve been hidin' from somethin' that should have never gone this far
But after all it’s what we’ve done that makes us what we are
And you’ve been talkin' in silence well if it’s silence you adore
Oh there’ll be one less set of footprints on your floor in the mornin'
Oh there’ll be one less set of footsteps on your floor
One less man to walk in
One less pair of jeans upon your door
One less voice a-talkin'
But tomorrow’s a dream away and today has turned to dust
Your silver tongue has turned to clay and your golden rule to rust
If that’s the way that you want it well that’s the way I want it more
Cause there’ll be one less set of footprints on your floor in the mornin'
Oh there’ll be one less set of footsteps on you floor in the mornin'
When Jim Croce burst on the scene in the early 70's it was like finding an old friend. Then before we had the chance to get to know him, he was gone. Sad doesn't come close.
I got to know Jim's work from a friend who discovered him back in the early 70s and he has many times been ahead of me in musical discoveries. That said I love a lot of Jim's music, and as another commenter said about just what happens to hit me at the moment or for a while. We were a generation gifted a great variety of music, expanding our tastes and learning of more and more to appreciate still, and sometimes we still haven't found it all in our lifetimes, but it's always a pleasure to find an artist old or new, who just hits a spot in your soul for a while or so.
I heard Jim Croce on a cassette at the age of 8ish and feel in love with Leroy Brown and "You don't mess around Jim"(my name is Jim so..) almost twenty years later I'm still rocking to a legend.
I never, ever get tired of listening to this song. Maury Mendelsons brilliant guitar work, the lyrics. I have been listening to this song since I was 10 years old. I'm almost 60 now. I still have it on vinyl.
Just amazing.
This man was so damn talented. The music coming from those guitars is so unique. I was walking through hall, between classes my freshman year in H.S. when I heard the announcement about his death. Brought tears to my eyes. His lyrics are timeless. Those of us that enjoy his music know he was one of greatest songwriters and performers ALL TIME
