Memphis in June
A shade veranda under Sunday blue sky
Memphis in June
And my cousin Miranda she’s making a blueberry pie
I can see the clock outside a ticking and a tocking
Everything so peaceful and dandy
I can see my grandmama 'cross the street still a rocking
Watching all the neighbours go by oh my Memphis in June
Sweet oleander blowing perfume in the air everywhere
Up jumps the moon to make it so much grander
It’s paradise honey take my advice honey
Cos there’s nothing loke old Memphis in June
This is really good. It would be a good ploy to play this to unsuspecting listeners versus Johnny Mercer's version then ask the question "who has the more understanding of this song?"
This mid-50s record by Hoagy is a masterpiece - with a great Johnny Mandel arrangement. The version recorded around the same time by his frequent songwriting collaborator Johnny Mercer (and ace arranger Billy May) is another gem!
Beautiful song one enjoys better and understands more when one has lived through and American summer. It is so warm, even hot that one tends to take it easy with physical activity. One usually relfects on life then as it is too hot to do anything else. I pity those that have to work hard like farmers or messengers with that climate.
There's a life-size statue of Hoagy at Indiana University, Bloomington, Indiana, playing the piano and composing "Memphis in June". It resembles the photograph of Hoagy that you used in your video.
Thanks for uploading the original Hoagy Carmichael. I hope you don't mind my little addition to Lucy's great rendition of the beautiful "Memphis In June".
Ginnie Powell, one of the most underrated of all jazz vocalists. She did a marvelous job with her interpretation of this gem.
Simple but beautiful summer song. One can easily imagine the heat of summer hearing it and making one to wish to relax. The scenes this song describes are very good. "I can see your Granny ´cross the Street still rocking, watching the neigbors go by".
