**Sigh**....This tune reminds me of my nights in Manhattan when I lived in the metro area... driving to the Holland tunnel in the wee hours of the morning along rain swept streets, the eerie 'buzzing' silence, the occasional homeless man sleeping on an abandoned building's front stoop, the steam rising up from the manhole covers, feeling warm & secure with snug walls of skyscapers surrounding me..... pffff, look at me trying to be all introspective & poetic.... LOL ^_^

How the hell did Freddie do that at 3:50? Every note was so accurate and clearly played

This is one of the most gorgeous and soulful songs ever written by Herbie. It makes me so nostaligic for the 60s and Slug's Saloon in New York City.

Just watched a short Bio on Herbie on KCET. It began in Herbie's studio within his home then moved to his living room where his piano was. He began playing Maiden Voyage. He was asked how he came up with this tune.He said it was originally for a mens cologne commercial. He wrote the tune on a napkin while flying then lost it somewhere along the way. The tune came back to mind later and he officially wrote it in it's entirety. Classic!

Not a comment for Tony Williams... I mean I am a pianist, and I love Herbie obviously. As all the band. But Tony is so underrated HERE (I edited the message, are you happy now? ). I LOVE his playing on Maiden Voyage. And I think that he gives a lot to the tune. For the atmosphere, interplaying... Everything.

loved it but it didn't hurt to have Freddie Hubbard — trumpet George Coleman — tenor saxophone Ron Carter — bass Tony Williams — drums

This album is one of the reason I have listened  to jazz for 45 years and also why Freddie Hubbard will always be my favorite trumpet player.

Clifford Brown and Freddie Hubbard are 2 of the most technically gifted trumpet players to ever live.
