George Russell’s Stratusphunk, rec’d 18 OCT 1960, appeared orig. on Riverside 341 (vinyl LP). Correct personnel for Stratusphunk: Al Kiger t/ David Baker tb/ Dave Young ts/ George Russell p/ Chuck Israels b/ Joe Hunt d) (This same unit cut a private recording of Stratusphunk earlier (01 SEP ‘60), in Lenox, Massachusetts.) Outstanding post! Thank you. :I:

David Baker now plays jazz cello since an automobile accident rendered his lips useless on the trombone.

I have to learn Russell's Lydian Concept. Playing off of modes rather than chords.

How is it possible this was hidden from me for nearly 55 years?

Very non-functional harmony, very quartal sounding.

My intro to George and his music was the "Othello Ballet Suite", some several decades ago. I'm all too happy to discover that there was a wealth of work still yet to enjoy. And I wouldn't know how to explain what the Lydian Chromatic Concept was if you put a gun to my head. All I know is what my ears like, and they like this just fiine!
