I have seldom heard something that moves me so much. Its the pureness of being at a hospital and everyone's life flowing by. It really makes you think if you don't know the story of why you are there. I think of all the people in the background and how they are following their own lives story. You can hear the kid in the background. You can imagine someone breathing their last breath there. You can imagine a child being born. You can imagine so many things when you hear this song. It's so pure, happy and yet so sad at the same time. Thank you for this musical experience. I doubt I will ever find something this moving.
From the Gabriel & Dresden reddit AMA, an explanation on how 'Hospital Piano' came to be:
"Josh has a son named Brayden and he got injured one Saturday afternoon a bunch of years ago and so Josh rushed Brayden to the hospital to get treatment. While they were waiting in the waiting room, Josh noticed an old piano. Now, when Josh sees a piano he can't really control himself and he will usually start playing the piano no matter what the situation. So Josh started playing the piano, working some chords and then he switched his iPhone's 'Voice Memos' app on and started recording. When we were working on This Love Kills Me, which samples 'Hospital Piano' Josh unveiled the sample to me, and I was floored by it. It was so emotional and pretty, i joked, 'there's our interlude for the album'; much like 'Amsterdam Interlude' was on our first album. I think the idea made Josh a bit nervous at first but I kept on him about it and then edited it down to shorten it and make it more clear. We experimented with where it goes on the album a number of times but in the end settled on it coming after 'Underwater' where it really shines best. Since it's a live recording and it was a kids' hospital, that explains the haunting children's voices in the background."
This sounds so cute, a little boy about a car. It's in Dutch. I hear "Auto auto" and glijden (gliding). It's a beautiful piece, was weird to hear for the very first time, when you hear it more often it totally makes sense
